The September 11 attacks, were four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks carried out by the militant Islamic extremist network al-Qaeda against the United States. On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners. The hijackers crashed the first two planes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and the third plane into the Pentagon. The fourth plane was intended to hit a federal government building but crashed in a field following a passenger revolt. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and instigated the global war on terror.

Yesterday we honored may fallen heroes, wearing a red poppy, lowering the flag to half-staff, and observing a minute of silence at 3:00 pm. It is also important to honor the service animals that have given their lives in supporting our great nation. We ask that Southeast Floridians think of the trained service dogs and remember them as well.

Before it became a federal holiday in 1971 and its observance moved to the last Monday in May, Memorial Day was called Decoration Day and took place on May 30th. This year, the last Monday in May falls on the original Decoration Day date.

The roots for Decoration Day go back to shortly after the Civil War when citizens paid local tributes to those who had died. In 1868, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, commander in…

May is National Military Appreciation Month. This is a time when Southeast Florida residents and all Americans pay tribute to the dedicated service members who have taken an oath to protect and serve our country. However, for many veterans, the return home from war can be yet another daunting battle as they nurse wounds that might not be visible on the surface. Tragically, 184 veterans a day are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress, and twenty take their own lives as a result.

South Florida nonprofit, American Humane aims to help these heroes with its Pups4Patriots program, which finds dogs in need of forever homes and trains them to become service dogs for veterans across the country at absolutely no cost to the veterans themselves.

Service…

Happy birthday to the U.S. Army! The U.S. Army is 246 years old and counting. The U.S. Army is America's first national institution. What started off as mostly a volunteer service, has evolved into a force to be reckoned with. The June 14th event is being commemorated with the annual wreath laying in Washington, D.C. including the Secretary of the Army, Chief of Staff and Sergeant Major.

The U.S. Army was founded on June 14, 1775, over a year before the Declaration of Independence. The Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of expert riflemen to serve the colonies for one year. Prior to that day, colonies had their own militias with no unified chain of command from place to place.

There was a time when there were never more than 48,000…

Veterans Day is all about honoring those who have served our country. It is a time for Americans to pay respects to those who have served. It is with Honor, Respect and Gratitude…Thank you!

The holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on November 11th, 1918, as that was the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Nonetheless, in 1954, the holiday was changed to Veterans Day to incorporate all veterans in all wars.  When originally celebrated as Armistice Day, the day marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918. Today we continue to celebrate the day…
