The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center of Boca Raton
Gumbo Limbo’s Mission: To support coastal and marine education, conservation and research endeavors of the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.Â
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center offers a variety of programs for kids, adults, schools and families. In fact, there is an activity planned that is available to the public every day. Group tours and summer camps are also a big hit for the nature center. Some of the daily events include outdoor sea tank feedings, hammock trails and indoor aquarium feedings. Â
The outdoor sea tank feedings educate the audience on the connection between the mangrove and coral reef communities that are ever present in south Florida. You will learn about the interesting behaviors of stingrays, sharks and other reef animals during these marine feedings. The mangrove feedings begin daily at 10:30am and the tropical coral reef and shipwreck feedings begin daily at 12:30pm. These feedings are free to people of all ages.Â
The hammock trails is a guided walk through a mangrove forest on the Gumbo Limbo boardwalk. You will wind your way through the ¼ mile long trail exploring the coastal hardwood hammock, which is a very rare environment and not common around the world. The area is teaming with fish and marine life in the water and beautiful birds and animals in the trees. These tours begin at 10:00am throughout the week.Â
The indoor aquarium feedings are super interesting! Here you will get to witness eel feedings, learn why female seahorses get jealous and why fish travel in schools. This is another free program for people of all ages and takes place at 2:30pm throughout the week.Â
Even though all of these activities and events are a big part of Gumbo Limbo’s strategic plan, the conservation of sea turtles is where their hearts are. The educated and experienced Gumbo Limbo staff joins their skill together to create the perfect home for rehabilitation and conservational efforts. The team takes care of sick and injured turtles. They gently and caringly get them healthy and once again release them into the wild. They also take great pride in protecting the delicate nests the turtles make along the beaches of Palm Beach County.Â
So, if you love the sea turtles and other marine life that makes south Florida so special, please come and support the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. You can volunteer with their team, come for the fun activities or donate to help support their determination. Not only is it for a fabulous and important cause, it is an unforgettable experience!Â
