Successful rehabilitation and release for “Crumpet”! “Crumpet” was released into the C17 Canal in North Palm Beach today! The manatee was first spotted near Manatee Lagoon in January 2022. The distressed but resilient sea cow evaded Florida Wildlife Commission for about two weeks before being spotted weeks later in Port Everglades in Broward nearly sixty miles away.

Crumpet was injured with a gash and floating sideways, unable to go underwater for food. SeaWorld and FWC transported “Crumpet” to SeaWorld Orlando where he recovered for almost seven months. FWC Marine Biologist Amber Howell stated “This manatee was in critical shape when we got to him. He has already gained about 400 pounds since we got to him in February. SeaWorld was able to…

Mangroves are magic to our ecosystems. Three species of mangroves are found in Palm Beach County. They are the Red Mangrove, Black Mangrove, and White Mangrove. Typically, Red Mangroves grow along the water's edge, Black Mangroves grow on slightly higher elevations than the Red Mangrove, and White Mangroves grow upland from the red and black. Mangroves line estuaries and canals, providing food, shelter, and hunting grounds for animals.

Mangroves also provide shoreline protection from wind, waves, and erosion. This ecosystem occurs in tidally influenced areas where strong ocean wave action is absent and where salt and freshwater mix. Soils are sandy, nutrient-rich, saline, and usually oxygen deficient. This plant system diversity provides one of the…

As they say, “a day late and a dollar short,” but in fact, we are years and years too late! Read on and be astonished about what you could buy for $1.00 back in the day. In 1821, land in Jupiter was sold for just $1.00 an acre! Florida became a formal state of the colonies in 1821 and a property-owner named Don Eusebio Gomez considered releasing acreage he owned.

In 1815, the King and Queen of Spain had awarded Don Eusebio Gomez 12,000 acres. The land was an area bordering the Indian and Loxahatchee Rivers, as well as a barrier island between the Jupiter Inlet and the St. Lucie Inlet.

The granted land to Gomez was for his “services to the crown.”  He was a merchant/shipper and a defender of St. Augustine. When Florida became a U.S. territory all…
