Years ago, the State of Florida created a short sportsman season to allow recreational divers to catch lobsters before the commercial lobster season begins. Lobster mini season is a highly anticipated event every year. When the official mini season kicks off, the coastal areas of Florida are flooded with lobster hunters trying to get their share of the bounty. The history of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens is a romantic one.  A wealthy industrialist, Ralph Norton, and head of the Acme Steel Company in Chicago, retired in 1939. He and his wife had acquired quite an art collection over the years.  They decided to move to West Palm Beach, Florida.

Upon moving to South Florida, the Norton’s decided to share their art collection with the community. The Norton Gallery and School of Art was built on their property. The location of gallery and school was linked to the early pioneers. Today that location is known as Pioneer Park, named for the early Lake Worth pioneers that gathered there on occasion.

Many folks think we celebrate the Fourth of July because it is the day we received our Independence from England but it was signed by Congress on July 2, 1777. Fireworks have been a part of the Fourth of July since the very first anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.  The custom of fireworks on the Fourth spread fairly slowly. They spread through New England and New York in the decades after the Revolution. But the firing of cannon and muskets and parades were much more common. In addition, fireworks at the time were very expensive, tricky to manage safely, and not nearly as impressive as the fireworks displays now.
