A day late, actually, many years too late, but back in 1821 land in Jupiter was sold for just $1.00 an acre!     The same year, in which the great land of Florida became a formal state of the colonies, a landowner named Don Eusebio Gomez considered releasing acreage he owned.   In 1815, the King and Queen of Spain awarded him 12,000 acres in an area surrounding the Indian and Loxahatchee Rivers as well as a barrier island between the Jupiter Inlet and the St. Lucie Inlet.   The name given to this area was a word for the Roman mythology god “Jobe”.

The land was given to Gomez for his “services to the crown”.   He was a merchant/shipper and a defender of St. Augustine.  When Florida became a U.S. territory all of the Spanish Land Grants, and this was…

Living at or near the beach has actual health benefits resulting from being near the sea. The ocean covers 71% of the earth’s surface and holds 97% of the earth’s water; it plays an important role in all of our lives.  The ocean water and sea air is good for the body and the soul.  Did you ever wonder why you sleep so well after a day at the beach?  Here in South Florida we have miles of beautiful white sandy beaches to choose from like the beaches in the “Sailfish Capital of the World” Town of Stuart, “Friendly Seaside Jewel” Town of Jupiter, “World Renowned” Town of Palm Beach, or the “International Playground” Town of South Beach/Miami.

The sea air provides wonderful benefits.  When waves break on the shoreline, air particles break apart releasing…

The U.S. Government requested that a group of visiting British aviators be accommodated at the local hotel, The Carlin House, and that a windsock be hoisted to the top of the flagpole during the winter of 1916/1917.  The intent of the visit was that the group consisting of three groups of three:  a pilot, copilot and mechanic along with a small seaplane practice advanced training maneuvers on the  Jupiter Inlet and Loxahatchee River.   The hotel was unable to accommodate the group, so they arranged to stay with Jupiter residents Mr. and Mrs. Walter Savage.   Mr. and Mrs. Savage were happy to accommodate!

The  3 small, single engine bi-winged seaplanes were marked Allied Planes of World War I; with traditional markings wide vertical red, white…

Horseracing has various forms, of which thoroughbred racing is the most popular and has been termed as “The Sport of Kings”.  Horses have remained a symbol of great wealth.  This has always been popular with the aristocrats and royalty of British society, thusly earning the title. Historically, records indicate that horseracing began as early as the days of Babylon, Syria, and Egypt.  Both chariot and mounted horses participated in the ancient Greek Olympics 648 B.C. Various types of racing have given rise to horse breeds that excel in specific disciplines of equestrian sports.

One equine sport, world-class international polo, is located in the heart of South Florida, just minutes from the exclusive Island of Palm Beach, The International Polo Club,…

The population of the Jupiter area was 145. In 1905 Reverend Dr. Charles P. Jackson started an elementary school for the children of Neptune (Jupiter).  Neptune was the designation for the area and the post office along the Florida East Coast Railroad.   Lighthouse keeper, James Armour, opened the Jupiter Post Office during 1884.  After three years of inactivity, Mary Moore Carlin reopened the Post Office in 1887 at the Jupiter Lifesaving Station, where her husband, Charles Carlin was the keeper.

The good people of this area converted a lifeboat from the battleship U.S.S. Maine and it served as a “school bus” for the children.  Later a ferry service across the Loxahatchee River transported the children until a bridge replaced it in 1911 when a…
