Manatee season is in full effect in South Florida.  This campaign is called “Operation Mermaid”.  During this period, a tremendous percentage of manatees swim to South Florida for the warmer waters.

Manatees are large, herbivorous marine mammals also known as sea cows.  Their bodies taper to a flat, paddle like tail.  They have two forelimbs, called flippers, with three to four nails on each flipper.  Their head and face are furrowed with whiskers on the snout.

The manatee needs warmth when surrounding water temperatures drop below 68 degrees.  The Florida manatee lives in brackish, salt and fresh water coastal areas around Florida, such as Stuart, Jupiter, Delray and Boca Raton.  The plant eating mammal surfaces every three to five minutes to…

The property located at 16133 Jupiter Farms Road in Jupiter has a long history.  It is rumored to have been a gangster hideout in the 1920’s and was owned by legendary actor Burt Reynolds in the 1980’s.  Notorious gangster Al Capone built the original home on the property in 1923.  Reynolds owned the ranch for years and shot scenes from the immensely successful “Smokey and the Bandit” movie, as well as scenes from the television series “B.L. Stryker” there.

Al Capone is said to have built the original home on the property in 1923. Capone was Brooklyn born and he ruled the streets of Chicago.  Capone mostly hung out in Miami, but he did not particularly like it there.  A news report places Capone in Palm Beach County in 1930.  At the time, West…

Artificial reefs provide habitat for many species and supplement the function of our natural reefs that are increasingly pressured as the boating population in Northern Palm Beach County continues to expand. Our growing population causes our natural reefs to decline, millions and millions of spawned reef fish eggs float away in the current, only to perish for lack of habitat to grow and mature in.

Artificial reefs are man made underwater structures that promote marine life.  They are an excellent way to enhance marine life in open barren areas.  Palm Beach County became involved in the artificial reef program in the 1960"s.  The first artifical reef  created was the east of Palm Beach consisting of a 165' Navy Patrol Craft, a 185' private yacht,…

One way for Florida residents to support sea turtle conservation is to purchase a sea turtle specialty license plate. Proceeds from the specialty license plates help fund the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Marine Turtle Protection Program.

Florida is a key location for endangered and threatened sea turtles of the world.  Sea turtles nest on our Florida shores and forage for food in our estuaries. Five species of turtles are found nesting on Florida beaches and protected by Florida state statutes.  Illegal harvesting, habitat encroachment, pollution, and hazardous boating are some of the things sea turtles fight to survive.

If you ever encounter an injured or dead sea turtle, please report it to Florida Fish and Wildlife…
