Researchers have conducted that if children take a lengthy break from learning they will not only miss out on learning new information but also can lose up to three months of math and reading skills learned in the previous months.

The large Southern U.S. grocery store chain Publix is working to keep Southeast Florida farmers in business while also supplying those in need during this difficult coronavirus pandemic. The supermarket giant announced a new initiative Wednesday to purchase fresh produce and milk from farmers, which would then be donated to Feeding America food banks.

 Publix Chief Executive Officer, Todd Jones said, “As a food retailer, we have the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the needs of families and farmers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. In this time of uncertainty, we are grateful to be able to help Florida’s produce farmers, southeastern dairies and families in our communities.”

West Palm Beach houses a botanical treasure, Mounts Botanical Garden, 531 North Military Trail is temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 virus, however the garden still grows on.  This is the oldest and largest public garden with over 2,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from six continents, including plants native to South Florida, herbs, tropical fruit trees, exotic trees, tropical fruit, and a variety of palms. 

The garden was named in remembrance of Marvin “Red” Mounts.  Mounts served Palm Beach County Farmers and Palm Beach County Extension for over 40 years. The show was originally scheduled for March of this year but was postponed until May and now the popular boat show has announced on their social media page and website that they will be going virtual.

Several COVID-19 testing centers are up and running in South Florida, with more expected to open in the coming weeks. Most of the centers are drive-thru only, which means you need to be in a car or truck with a working window.

Each of the centers also has criteria for testing eligibility and different sets of hours. The most common symptoms are fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases an infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and even death. The period within which the symptoms would appear is 2-14 days.

Researchers at the Scripps Institute in Jupiter say some of their latest research may have promising implications for an effective coronavirus vaccine.

The findings are still preliminary and have yet to be published, but one member of the research team is expected to update the public on the project and similar efforts during a webinar Scripps will host Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Publix supermarket, which has been doing a great job for the residence of the Palm Beaches, has designated special reserved shopping hours for both first responders and seniors.

First Responders Hours

Publix is designating Thursday evenings, 8 – 9 p.m., and Friday mornings, 7 – 8 a.m., as special shopping hours for first responders and hospital staff. This change will continue until further notice. Publix Pharmacy will also be open during these times.

Two local Zoo’s and Safari’s in Palm Beach County are currently closed to the public due to COVID-19 but are active on their websites and social media pages by posting pictures and videos of the animals for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own home.  

The Lion Country Safari, located in western Palm Beach County is known as Florida’s largest walk through and drive through Safari and has won numerous awards and recognitions for being one of Palm Beach County’s Top Attractions.  The safari is home to over 900 animals that roam freely among the 600 plus acres and is said to be the first cage-less zoo in the United States.
