The large Southern U.S. grocery store chain Publix is working to keep Southeast Florida farmers in business while also supplying those in need during this difficult coronavirus pandemic. The supermarket giant announced a new initiative Wednesday to purchase fresh produce and milk from farmers, which would then be donated to Feeding America food banks.

 Publix Chief Executive Officer, Todd Jones said, “As a food retailer, we have the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the needs of families and farmers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. In this time of uncertainty, we are grateful to be able to help Florida’s produce farmers, southeastern dairies and families in our communities.”

Feeding South Florida is an inventive direct-service program and network of nonprofit partner agencies. Feeding South Florida has supplied 62 million pounds of food.  The non-profit organization has arranged over 50 million meals last year. Over 700,000 individuals, over 100,000 seniors, 230,000 children have been fed.

Feeding South Florida is the largest, well-organized food bank serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties. The new website is named Keep Florida Growing and announced in their social media page that the website is a portal that provides agriculture related information and food information.  Agriculture is the second largest economic driver in the state and the website was created to help out our local community and our local Florida growers and farmers.
