Sebastian Inlet is part of the east coast’s surfing epicenter and one of the biggest beach breaks on the Atlantic Coastline.  The inlet is located at the southern end of Sebastian Inlet State Park in Brevard County and Indian River County.  It is home to the largest concentration of surf shops and board builders.

Just north of Vero Beach, Palm Beach County,12 miles straight up U.S. Highway One, and 15 miles south of Melbourne, the Sebastian Inlet was originally cut in 1872.  It was known as Gibson’s Cut.  The settler, David Peter Gibson, attempted to open up a cut into the Atlantic Ocean.  He did not acquire title to the property where the digging took place until 1885.  At the time, the cut was only 260 feet wide and the distance was only 120…

Why do we have a leap year every four years? A leap year is when an extra day is added to the end of February every four years. It all comes down to the solar system's discrepancy with the Gregorian calendar.

What do you do if you were born on February 29th.The chances of having a leap birthday are one in 1,461. It is suggested if you were born in the am, celebrate annually on February 28.  If you were born in the afternoon, celebrate on March 1.  However, if you are a true “leaper” you should only celebrate every four years, which at a certain age becomes very advantageous!

A complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days. So what to do but add 6 hours every year and…

Perhaps in South Florida the weather is a bit cool, say 70 degrees, obviously much too cool on a winter day to hit the beach or the waterways.  It would be a great opportunity to try something a little different.   Pull the trigger and consider a shotgun sport at one of the many sporting clubs in the area.

The National Sporting Federation defines sporting clays as “a challenging clay target game designed to simulate a variety of field shooting situations. On sporting clays course shooters are presented with a wide variety of targets that duplicate the flight path of birds, such as flushing, crossing, incoming and other angling shots.”

South Florida Shooting Club is one of the best shooting clubs in South Florida.  Only a forty-five minute drive…

This week, February 17, 2016, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will host a public meeting on the replacement of the US 1 Bridge, connecting the Town of Jupiter to the Village of Tequesta.  The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Jupiter Community Center.

The bridge, constructed in 1958, spans over the Loxahatchee River and Intracoastal Waterway.  It has been deemed "structurally deficient and functionally obsolete".  In September of 2014, the bridge was structurally checked out and received "substandard sufficiency ratings providing justification for replacement".

Back in 2013 a $16 million rehab of the bridge was taken into consideration.  Replacing the 50 plus year old…

A rare North Atlantic right mother whale and calf appeared this week in the Sebastian Inlet and meandered into the mouth of the Indian River Lagoon.

The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered species of large whales.  According to the World Wildlife Federation, there are approximately 500 whales and very little population growth even though seven decades of protection have been in place.  The whale is usually found along the Atlantic Coastline, primarily the United States and Canada.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have been following the particular North Atlantic right whale for four years now.  They have named her “Clipper” for she has a missing section of her fluke. These whales migrate every year in…

One of the best features of living in southern Florida is the year round warm weather. Luckily, for us Floridians we often get to walk the beach or surf the waves while the rest of the country is a snow covered, wonderland.

Thanks to a winter storm brewing off of the mid-Atlantic coast, there is an eminent threat of snow to the North East, and to just a crisp night here in Florida. South Florida will continue to be fairly warm and very sunny this week with a cool breeze in the air with temperatures still not beating the season’s record low.

According the National Weather Service, “the low temperature so far this morning in West Palm Beach was just 44 degrees. While that’s 13 degrees below the normal low for this time of year, it doesn’t beat the 40…

Manatees, often called "sea cows," have captured the hearts of Floridians and visitors alike. These peaceful creatures are frequently spotted in Florida's warm waters during the winter months when they seek refuge in natural springs and power plant outflows. While it may be tempting to swim near, touch, or pet a manatee during an encounter, doing so raises critical legal and ethical questions. In this blog post, we’ll explore whether it is legal to touch a manatee in Florida, why these regulations exist, and how you can responsibly enjoy manatee encounters without harming them.

Using renewable, recyclable materials is an increasing trend in building.  Both builders and consumers are more concerned about energy efficiency and leaving a smaller carbon footprint on the planet.  The new energy efficient movement is leaning toward sustainability.

Energy efficient appliances are now standard in new construction and in remodeling. The initial cost is more expensive than that of non-designated energy efficient appliances; however, over the long term the savings outweigh the slightly higher purchase price. Homeowners may qualify for a federal tax credit for making improvements or installing appliances design to boost the energy-efficiency of their home. You must purchase new energy-efficient equipment, and the equipment must be…
