Leading up to the start of the U.S. Open, Merion Golf Club had received its fair share of rain. With the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea making its way through the Philadelphia area last Friday and a cold front causing more rain on Monday and Tuesday, the course had received close to six inches of rain in five days (the typical average rain fall totals for the area is about three inches for the entire month of June).

Some dryer weather came Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, however a storm moved in from the Midwest on Thursday and wreaked havoc on Thursday’s opening round. Two separate weather delays affected all 156 players in the event and caused the first round to be extended into Friday.

The first delay came around…

So many people have a love affair with the sun.  It makes you feel good, look good.  Many people love the warmth of the sun.

Here in South Florida sun exposure is a way of life.  The Jupiter beaches are amazingly beautiful with powder white sand and sparkly blue waters.  The Loxahatchee River is a wide waterway of scenic beauty leading to a wildlife preserve and nature sanctuary. Being outdoors and on or near the water is a way of life.  Awareness about sun safety and information on tanning beds is essential. Skin cancer awareness is a Floridian way of life. As with many cancers, early diagnosis and treatment can be very effective. The YouTube video entitled "Dear 16 Year Old Me" is very direct and pertains to the extremes of melanomas.  Many of…

For the first time since 1981, the U.S. Open returns this week to the famed East Course at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. This U.S. Open will mark the 18th time that Merion has hosted a USGA Championship, more than any other venue. While it has hosted several USGA events since its last Open, U.S. Amateur Championship in 2005 and the Walker Cup in 2009, it has been overlooked in recent years due to its length.

Playing at only 6,996 yards this week, Merion will be the first venue since Shinnecock Hills in 2004 to measure less than 7,000 yards. The short distance, coupled with the advancements in ball and club technology could prove to be no match for today’s current pros. Several inches of rain have drenched the…

Throughout our lives we have all had to deal with airline companies losing our luggage. The anger and frustration caused from finding out that your luggage never made the connecting flight or ended up in the wrong city can be just one of the stressors of traveling. Next time you get involved in this inconvenient situation just remember the name Scott Gardiner.

Gardiner flew into Ohio from Australia Sunday night in preparation for his Monday qualifier in Columbus. However, one very important thing was missing. His clubs. The airline lost he clubs in transit and as a result, Gardiner had to compile a makeshift set from multiple staff members at the Lakes Golf and Country Club where he was playing. Normally playing a bag…

Golf is a great game but can sometimes be played to slow. We live in the golf mecca, with some of the best courses in the country located in the Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter area. However, many people make the decision to not play golf because its takes up too much time. With that in mind, the Golf Channel has named June Pace of Play Month. Here are some helpful tips to speed up your round next time you are on the course and have more fun.

Move promptly- Proceed quickly to your ball after you hit your shot and be ready when it’s your turn to hit. One of the best ways to ensure that you get to your ball quickly is to take note of the area your ball landed in, especially off the tee and identify physical features that are near the ball’s landing site.

To some, a lawn is the crowning glory of their property. Yet to others it is a tremendous hit on their checkbook. How do you feel?

When I grew up, Saturday entailed us mowing and weeding.  Not quite my American dream, or that of my brothers as young teens, but we had a lush green lawn and it was every suburbanites dream.

Today, I still love the look of an impeccable lawn.  I enjoy the smell of fresh cut grass and the feel of it under my bare feet.  Not always so happy with the cost to maintain it, the noise to mow it, the weed eaters, the mowers, aerators, chemicals and fertilizers, etc.  All of this to keep the turf looking great. Nevertheless, we love the look!

Studies show that well maintained landscaping can add 15% to the value of a home.  The studies…

1.    AMP UP CURB APPEAL:  Does the outside of your home make them want to see the inside?  The first thing the buyer sees is the outside of your home.  Make it as appealing as possible.  Maintain the yard, a clean driveway and an inviting porch.  Drawing the buyer in wanting to see more, it is a good start.  Touch-up or repaint exterior.  Plant fresh annual flowers, keep porches swept, and gutters clean.  Showing that the exterior of your home is well kept will lead buyers to the assumption that the home is well kept in general.

2.    SIMPLIFY, CLEAN, and DE-CLUTTER:  Do a deep clean or hire a professional cleaning service to make sure your home looks its best.  Keep beds made and carpets vacuumed.  Rooms will look larger by removing clutter. Over stuffed…

Texting while driving is viewed by most people to be dangerous and in 40 states, it is illegal.  Florida will be the 41st state to ban texting and driving.  Governor Rick Scott is set to ban the act.  In a statement, the Governor said that texting while driving concerns him as a father and grandfather.  He also said state officials must do everything they can do to keep the roads safe, particularly during the 100 days summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  Those days are the deadliest days for teenagers on the road.

Florida’s Governor signed the ban Tuesday afternoon on texting while driving. The restriction takes effect October 1 and is a secondary offense.  A secondary offense means offenders can only be ticketed if stopped for another violation.  A…
