“Mardi Gras,” is French for “Fat Tuesday.”  Fat Tuesday is the last day before Lent. Lent is the season of fasting and prayer observed by most Christian denominations in the forty days leading up to Easter. A time for carefree celebration, Mardi Gras traditionally served to balance out the solemnity of the days that follow. To prepare for Lent, religious people emptied their pantries of indulgences like eggs, lard, and sugar. Once a month, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum host a hike through their 120-acre outstanding natural area in Jupiter. The area is one of only three federally designated Outstanding Natural Area. The area is preserved for the precious history of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse location and the botanical beauty found in the area. Congressionally designated as an Outstanding Natural Area in 2008.

The intention behind the federal designation is to “protect, conserve, and enhance the unique and nationally important historic, natural, cultural, scientific, educational, scenic, and recreational values of the Federal land surrounding the Lighthouse for the benefit of present generations and future generations for the people in the United States.”
