The U.S. Government requested that a group of visiting British aviators be accommodated at the local hotel, The Carlin House, and that a windsock be hoisted to the top of the flagpole during the winter of 1916/1917.  The intent of the visit was that the group consisting of three groups of three:  a pilot, copilot and mechanic along with a small seaplane practice advanced training maneuvers on the  Jupiter Inlet and Loxahatchee River.   The hotel was unable to accommodate the group, so they arranged to stay with Jupiter residents Mr. and Mrs. Walter Savage.   Mr. and Mrs. Savage were happy to accommodate!

The  3 small, single engine bi-winged seaplanes were marked Allied Planes of World War I; with traditional markings wide vertical red, white…

For thousands of years, travelers have sailed Florida waters looking for treasure. Some of those ships never made it to shore. Their past may be mentioned in history books but their remnants are still obvious underwater. Some of the shipwrecks have been well-off to have been selected as a Florida Underwater archeological sanctuary.

In 1987, Florida started developing an arrangement of underwater parks featuring shipwrecks and other historic sites around the state. The shipwrecks are such a popular attraction for scuba divers to witness a part of Florida’s history up close.  Not only are the preserves very interesting with the archeological features but also the marine life that make these museums come alive.

Each underwater site is construed by a sign;…

When a natural area is invaded often by a natural dispersal of seeds, or planting of exotic species that has become naturalized, these “weeds” interfere with the function of the natural community.  Invasive plants have been identified at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area.  The three-week removal project of the exotics is scheduled to begin Monday, August 25, 2014 in the hopes of attracting native plants and animals to the area such as gopher tortoises and scrub jays.  Black and red mangroves will be placed along the shoreline.  They have a stronger root system, disperse waves better which will be better at preventing erosion, and create a better habitat for young marine life.

 The award-winning magazine The Nature…

Fishing Report 8.22.14

Typical South Florida weather patterns for the weekend with some favorable winds should have the fish biting. Even the flats skiffs were getting in on the wahoo bite with the flat seas.

OFFSHORE-
Dolphin fishing improved over the last week for those of you who run way offshore. About 15-25 miles offshore from Palm Beach to Jupiter seem to produce the best number of dolphin. Lots of small ones, but enough bigger fish around to keep things interesting.

In a little closer, blackfin tuna action seemed to pick up in 250-500' of water off Palm Beach Inlet. Hard to beat a nice assorted trolling spread of feathers, daisy chains, and small jethead lures for the little tuna.

In on the 120' ledge the fishing is on fire (just maybe not for…

Various types of racing have given rise to horse breeds that excel in specific disciplines of equestrian sports.

One equine sport, world-class international polo, is located in the heart of South Florida, just minutes from the exclusive Island of Palm Beach, The International Polo Club,…

August is the national month of coffee!

FUN FACT:  Did you know that coffee is the second most recognizable scent in America – second only to the smell of the aroma of burning wood.

Social aspects of “coffee” have been noted in modern culture for quite some time.  The United States is the largest market for coffee, followed by Germany and Japan.   Inviting someone for a cup of coffee has led to Americans embracing “the café” as a social gathering place to relax.   An individual inviting another to their home, late at night, for a cup of coffee after a date could be an invitation something more than just a cup of coffee.  Coffee in culture or trade is a central theme and prominently referenced in much fiction and regional history.
