Countries around the world have their own unique New Years Eve and New Years Day traditions. Many of them are widely known and others get more creative while celebrating the end of one year and the beginning of a new year. This year, the holiday plans might be altered a little bit but certain holiday traditions will continue on into the new year.

Here are some interesting facts about New Years.

New Year’s Eve is America’s fourth favorite holiday. Number one is Christmas, followed by Thanksgiving, and then the Fourth of July.

In previous years more than 112.5 million people travel for New Year’s and the most popular holiday destinations in the United States are Orlando, FL, Anaheim, CA, and Honolulu, HI.

Roughly 360 million glasses of sparkling wine are consumed on New Year’s Eve every year.

In any given year, more than one million people attend the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square. New York City has more than 7,000 police officers patrolling and more than 1,200 security cameras installed in and around Times Square during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The Crystal Ball that is dropped every year in Times Square is made of 2,688 Waterford Crystals and weighs over 11,875 pounds. The Ball Drop was made famous in 1907 when it first made it debut and has helped ring in the New Year every year except in 1942 and 1943 due to the WWII light restrictions.

More than 200 million people watch the Times Square celebrations on TV, more than 3.6 million live stream on Facebook and more than 1 billion people watch from around the world.

The average number of births on New Year’s Day in the United States is 11,283.

Roughly 44% of Americans make a New Years Resolution every year and of the 44%, roughly 31% of Americans do not keep their resolutions.

The top New Years Resolutions are exercise more, eat healthier, save money, lose weight, and reduce stress.

On New Year’s Day, more than 3.2 million flowers are used for the annual Rose Parade held in California. The parade is usually attended by 700,000 people and more than 37 million watch the parade on tv.
