Sea turtles tell us the health of our oceans, and the oceans tell us the health of our planet. Loggerhead Marinelife Center(LMC) in Juno Beach is working diligently to conserve the health of our ocean ecosystems through public education, research, and rehabilitation with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles. Three-time Emmy Award winner and wildlife advocate Jeff Corwin will be the keynote speaker at the Tenth Annual Go Blue Awards Luncheon.

“Go Blue” recognizes businesses, non-profits, and individuals who have promoted, implemented, or contributed to improve and protect our oceans, beaches, and wildlife.

The luncheon will take place on Friday, October 26th at 11:00 AM at the Kravis Center for Performing Arts in Downtown West Palm Beach, and tickets are $95 until October 13th.

Loggerhead Marinelife Center(LMC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit education and ocean conservation facility located on the Atlantic Ocean in Juno Beach and is one of the most treasured organizations in Florida. The facility focuses on sea turtle rehabilitation and houses a variety of exhibits including live sea turtles and other coastal creatures. Exhibits include a massive prehistoric Archelon sea turtle replica, salt water aquaria and displays of local wildlife, as well as educational displays about South Florida’s marine environment.

The Florida DEP has recently launched a #SkipTheStraw movement to combat plastic pollution in the environment. Skip the Straw is a pledge for residents to say "no" to straws for just one week- in hopes this starts a trend and forms a habit of ditching single-use plastics.

Plastic straws are easily picked up by wind and can end up in our oceans. In fact it's in the top 5 trash items collected from our waterways every year. In most places straws aren't recyclable, and when they aren't disposed of properly they can not only endanger wildlife, but also humans as they are broken down into microplastics which travel through the food chain. The Responsible Pier Initiative is a Florida program designed to promote a healthy pier environment for sea turtles and other marine life with the cooperation of fisherman. The three components of the Responsible Pier Initiative include providing first responders with necessary training and resources to effectively respond to sea turtle injuries and strandings, installation of educational signage on fishing piers, and underwater cleaning beneath piers and surrounding areas on a regular basis.

A young adult loggerhead sea turtle, is scheduled to be released back to the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. He was named “Squash” by Loggerhead Marinellite Center, in seaside Juno Beach, marine biologists and center employees.

Squash, the turtle, was found floating and incapable of diving below the surface.  Sea turtles are air breathing reptiles, they need to surface to breathe. Sea turtles can hold their breath for several hours and depending upon the level of activity, a resting or sleeping turtle can remain underwater for 4-7 hours.

Squash was spotted last November 11, 20’16 floating and unable to dive in the Intracoastal Waterway near Jensen Beach. Florida Fish and Wildlife officers brought the turtle to…

The Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach hosts a fun and educational fish feeding program for the kids. This is a free program an it  takes place at the Mangrove exhibit, which displays the habitats of Florida’s coastal ecosystems. 

Kids who attend the program will get to learn about the different animals that live in these environments and their feeding habits. They will get to see an up-close and live feeding to see how the fish feed and interact with each other. Kids get to touch and see the different types of foods these fish eat too, from corals, anemones, other fish and plankton. 

The Fish Feeding program at Loggerhead Marinelife Center takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00pm. The program is free for everyone.
