The Florida State Park is located five miles north of Jupiter in Martin County between Tequesta and Hobe Sound. Jonathan Dickinson State Park got is name after a Quaker merchant named Jonathan Dickinson who wreaked his boat off the coast in 1696.

The Park served as an army base and home to Camp Murphy during the second World War. Today, you can still see the barracks throughout the park. After the war, the property was transferred back to the state in 1947 to be used as a state park. The state park officially opened to the public in 1950.

Martin County, like many counties in Florida has entered Phase Two of Reopening South Florida last week. Nearby counties Palm Beach County, Broward County and Miami-Dade County are still waiting to hear back from Governor DeSantis on whether they can enter Phase Two. Phase Two took effect on Friday, June 5th in Martin County.

Here is what Phase Two means:

  • Restaurants may allow bar-top seating with appropriate social distancing
  • Pubs and Bars may operate at 50% capacity inside and full capacity outside with appropriate social distancing
  • Retail stores may operate at full capacity
  • Gyms and Fitness Centers may operate at full capacity
  • Entertainment houses such as concert houses, auditoriums, movie theaters, playhouses, bowling alleys,

Good news for beach goers, Martin County will open its beaches to nonresidents starting today, Wednesday, May 20th. Previously, beaches in Martin County have been opened since May 8th to residents only.

For the past few weeks, there were electric signs posted saying that deputies would be checking ID’s and addresses to make sure beach goers lived in Martin County. During this time, Hobe Sound Beach remained closed due to its close proximity to Palm Beach County but is now open for visitors.

Palm Beach County opened their beaches with no restrictions on Monday, May 18th. The decision to reopen the beaches to all comes as Broward County and Miami-Dade County entered into Phase One of Reopening Florida on Monday. Broward County beaches will remain

Yesterday, golf returned in Florida for the TaylorMade Driving Relief Charity match that was held at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach. Palm Beach County residents and professional golfers Matthew Wolff and Rickie Fowler competed against Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson in a team’s skins game with a $3 million dollar prize to be donated to coronavirus relief.

The match began at 2 pm yesterday and McIlroy and Johnson played for the American Nurses Foundation and Fowler and Wolff played for the CDC Foundation. The final results gave the American Nurses Foundation $1.85 million dollars from the McIlroy and Johnson team and $1.15 million dollars to the CDC Foundation from the Fowler and Wolff team.

In a meeting held by Governor DeSantis yesterday, that he plans on opening up Florida to all professional sports teams that want to resume activity. 

DeSantis said” all professional sports are welcome here for practicing and for playing”. The conference was held yesterday afternoon in Tallahassee. DeSantis also mentioned that “if you have a team in a area that won’t let you practice, we’ll find a place for you here in Florida”. 

The news is coming a month after Florida Division of Emergency Management agreed that professional sports are considered an essential service and were allowed to resume play in Florida, provided they are closed to the general public.  The governor made a comment stating that while professional sports might not necessarily

County Commissioners met last week to discuss reopening Martin County and the steps to take. The meeting was held Friday morning at The Blake Library in downtown Stuart.  

Starting today, Monday, May 4th, Martin County is reopening golf courses, boat ramps, parks and beaches, however Hobe Sound Beach will remain closed due to its close proximity to Palm Beach County where the beaches remain closed.  Bathtub Beach will also remain closed in Martin County. 

 In addition to all county parks, private and public golf courses and boat ramps opening racquet sports will be allowed at parks, pavilions will reopen but playgrounds will remain closed.  Boat ramps will be open for commercial or recreational use.

Today, Martin County leaders will meet up and discuss the county’s next steps in reopening. County Commissioners are holding a meeting this morning at the Blake Library in downtown Stuart. 

The meeting today will review the state guidelines that Governor DeSantis laid out earlier this week about Florida’s plan to reopen in phases. The County Commissioners are currently meeting to make the best decision for the Martin County residents. 

The County can decide whether or not to participate the Governor’s Phase One Reopening Plan, which allows retail shops to open at 25% capacity.  Also included in Phase One is restaurants can do outdoor seating with social distancing and indoor seating with 25% capacity.  All salons, gyms and movie theaters will

Located between Hobe Sound and Tequesta is the Jonathan Dickinson State Park. The State Park is home to 16 distinct natural communities that make up the park. 

The 10,500-acre park was named after Jonathan Dickinson, a Quaker merchant who became shipwrecked off the coast nearby in 1696.  The grounds in World War II were used as a secret training school and camp called Camp Murphy with over 6,600 men. Following the war the land became now known as Jonathan Dickinson State Park in 1950.
