South Florida needs to stay informed. We need to get the latest most valid information on guidelines for prevention by the media and then plan accordingly. Addressing the unknown is very difficult. In the face of an epidemic, we are uncertain how to respond. Let’s all take a deep breath and long exhale.

Threatened by contagion, alarmed by unknown risks, we move into survival mode. We need to relax.  We ruminate. We have the urge to connect and the fear of contamination. We become inundated with mass media warnings and alarming information. Fear can pull us into anger and uncertainty. It exhausts us.

Shutting off the news and taking a walk or make a puzzle help reduce stress. Daily routines like exercise of any type, biking, running, playing…

The Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach is seeing a massive number in leatherback sea turtle nests along the beach. Sea Turtle Nesting Season starts in March and continues until the end of October.

The nearly 10 mile stretch of beach that the sea turtle research and rehabilitation center monitor has counted to date 69 nests, which is significantly more than normal for this time of year.  Each nest usually contains roughly about 100 eggs that require 45 days to 60 days to hatch.

Juno Beach is one of the largest sea turtle nesting locations in the world. The main reason why Juno Beach is the most populated sea turtle nesting location is because of the close proximity to the Gulf Stream current that bends towards Florida.

The CDC says there’s no evidence that any animals in the U.S. have contracted or can spread the virus. This also means that quarantining them is an unnecessary measure. (And using medical masks, even for entertaining photo ops, is a wasteful and potentially dangerous practice, in light of shortages of these essential supplies at hospitals that really need them.)

Taking Precautions

What remains uncertain is if pets can carry the virus on their fur in the same way that the virus could live on hard surfaces for up to three days (and potentially on soft materials like cardboard boxes or laundry for 24 hours). Because we still have a lot to learn about this novel illness, erring on the side of caution is never a bad idea. There are healthy habits…
