Twelve schools in Palm Beach County are now making sure kids get a full three meals a day by beginning to serve dinner. The meals will be offered at no charge for any students in after-school programs and each will contain a meat or a protein alternative, a grain, fruit, a vegetable and milk.

According to Feeding America, an organization providing food to hungry children, nearly 20 percent of kids do not know where their next meal is coming from. To help get this number closer to zero, twelve schools have joined 55 other sites in Palm Beach County to serve dinner on a daily basis for kids in need.

These are the schools that are now participating:

Congress Middle School, Boynton Beach

 Osceola Creek Middle School, Loxahatchee

The Palm Beach County Boxed for Success School Supply Drive saw a record-breaking year for donations, and local kids have plenty of supplies for the school year thanks to the generosity of area residents.

The drive received nearly 30,000 items including notebooks, paper, pencils, markers, crayons, tissues and glue sticks. Cash donations also totalled $14,600 which was by far the most money in the drive’s six-year history, doubling its previous high of $7,000 in 2014.

All of the supplies and monetary donations were evenly distributed to three Title 1 elementary schools in the county, where more than 90 percent of those students' families are low income.

In fact, since opening in 1992, the Kravis Center has provided access to the performing arts for about 2.3 million schoolchildren.

You may ask how this improves our youth in the community, and while as an Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts alumni I may want to say “It just does”, there are actually studies to prove it. According to Princeton, integrating the arts into school curriculum improves academic performance and student discipline, while it also revitalizes…
