Fishing Report 8.29.14

Snook fishing season opens, college football season starts, typical South Florida weather and a three day weekend… Life is GOOD!

OFFSHORE-
Weather was very jagged earlier in the week but is shaping up to look like a very fishable weekend. Dolphin should make a showing and the east winds may even push them in a little closer than they have been. If you’re in the 200’-400’ range of water trolling for dolphin, consider putting a daisy chain way far back for a good chance to catch a blackfin tuna. On the ledge, you will find a few kingfish, Bonita and sharks. Be ready to keep the rods bent offshore this weekend.

INSHORE-
Snook season opens on Monday September 1st (Labor Day) and they are swimming everywhere. Snook have mullet on their…

South Florida is not only known for its fantastic fishing but also its fish feeding. It’s not Tarpon fishing its Tarpon feeding. These giant silver kings are considered one of the great saltwater game fishes not only because of their size but also their fighting spirits when hooked. They are very strong and make spectacular leaps into the air to spit out the hook.

The Atlantic Tarpon collect at numerous South Florida marinas and people congregate to the docks to get a chance to feed the huge fish, sometimes even by hand. One of the classic and well-known Tarpon feeding experiences is at Robbie’s Marina in the Florida Keys. The giant tarpon are used to being hand-fed and they congregate…

Stretching from Palm Beach to Miami, Florida’s Gold Coast established its name from the gold Spanish coins that occasionally wash up on the beach shores and the golden way of life of its wealthy homeowners.

Florida’s Gold Coast sparkles with chic and glamourous sophistication. The delicious cafes and bistros are as common as alluring swim wear and this metropolitan park of the rich and famous individuals provide entertainment distinct from anywhere else in Florida. Where else would you run into Michael Jordan having a delightful sushi dinner, or Venus Williams singing karaoke? You may walk past Donald and Ivana Trump enjoying a cup of hot Cuban coffee. Shimmy by Shakira shopping at a local fresh market, Nicolas Cage breezing through the airport, or…

The U.S. Government requested that a group of visiting British aviators be accommodated at the local hotel, The Carlin House, and that a windsock be hoisted to the top of the flagpole during the winter of 1916/1917.  The intent of the visit was that the group consisting of three groups of three:  a pilot, copilot and mechanic along with a small seaplane practice advanced training maneuvers on the  Jupiter Inlet and Loxahatchee River.   The hotel was unable to accommodate the group, so they arranged to stay with Jupiter residents Mr. and Mrs. Walter Savage.   Mr. and Mrs. Savage were happy to accommodate!

The  3 small, single engine bi-winged seaplanes were marked Allied Planes of World War I; with traditional markings wide vertical red, white…

For thousands of years, travelers have sailed Florida waters looking for treasure. Some of those ships never made it to shore. Their past may be mentioned in history books but their remnants are still obvious underwater. Some of the shipwrecks have been well-off to have been selected as a Florida Underwater archeological sanctuary.

In 1987, Florida started developing an arrangement of underwater parks featuring shipwrecks and other historic sites around the state. The shipwrecks are such a popular attraction for scuba divers to witness a part of Florida’s history up close.  Not only are the preserves very interesting with the archeological features but also the marine life that make these museums come alive.

Each underwater site is construed by a sign;…

When a natural area is invaded often by a natural dispersal of seeds, or planting of exotic species that has become naturalized, these “weeds” interfere with the function of the natural community.  Invasive plants have been identified at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area.  The three-week removal project of the exotics is scheduled to begin Monday, August 25, 2014 in the hopes of attracting native plants and animals to the area such as gopher tortoises and scrub jays.  Black and red mangroves will be placed along the shoreline.  They have a stronger root system, disperse waves better which will be better at preventing erosion, and create a better habitat for young marine life.

 The award-winning magazine The Nature…

Fishing Report 8.22.14

Typical South Florida weather patterns for the weekend with some favorable winds should have the fish biting. Even the flats skiffs were getting in on the wahoo bite with the flat seas.

OFFSHORE-
Dolphin fishing improved over the last week for those of you who run way offshore. About 15-25 miles offshore from Palm Beach to Jupiter seem to produce the best number of dolphin. Lots of small ones, but enough bigger fish around to keep things interesting.

In a little closer, blackfin tuna action seemed to pick up in 250-500' of water off Palm Beach Inlet. Hard to beat a nice assorted trolling spread of feathers, daisy chains, and small jethead lures for the little tuna.

In on the 120' ledge the fishing is on fire (just maybe not for…
