June 8, 2021 is World Ocean Day. Fortunately, here in Palm Beach County there are several organizations that help by keeping the ocean free of garbage left on our beaches with beach cleanups.  This little piggy keeps the beaches clean.  The United Nations day, World Ocean Day, is for celebrating the role of the oceans in our everyday life and inspiring action to protect the ocean and sustainably use marine resources. 

Many countries have celebrated this special day since 1992, following the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro. In 2008, the UN General Assembly decided that, as of 2009, 8 June would be designated by the United Nations as “World Ocean Day”.

The Loggerhead Marinelife Center has recently added their popular Guided Turtle Walks back to their events calendar this June. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights join the Loggerhead Marinelife Center to visit with the sea turtles and get a chance to witness the sea turtle nesting process on the beach.

The Guided Turtle Walks is a unique program that allows guest to witness and observe the egg laying process of sea turtles and learn all about it. The walks require approval from the state and during the event an experienced member of the Loggerhead Marinelife Center staff search the beach for sea turtle while visitors learn about the process at the center. The Loggerhead Marinelife Center hosts a weekly Self-Guided Beach Clean Up on Saturday mornings for a chance for the public to help keep our beautiful beaches clean for us and the sea turtles.

Now more than ever the center needs our help. Sea Turtle Nesting Season begins in early March and goes until the end of October. During the seven months span, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center staff monitor the 9.5 miles of beach between the northern Palm Beach County line and the John D MacArthur Beach State Park. This area is one of the most populated sea turtle nesting spots in the world. During this time thousands of sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach.

This Summer, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center is excited to bring back their popular Sea Turtle Walks event to their calendar.  On Tuesday through Saturday evenings, beginning June 1st, the center is inviting guests to join in on their Guided Sea Turtle Walks.

The center has gotten approval from the state to bring guests down to the beach and witness, observe, and learn about sea turtle nesting and the egg-laying process of sea turtles. Sea Turtle Nesting Season begins March 1st through October 31st and the beaches of Jupiter and Juno Beach are a popular nesting spot for sea turtles.  The center monitors the beaches daily for new nests.

The public can now help marine life by adopting a sea turtle through the Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s Adopt a Sea Turtle program. This unique program helps to benefit further research, rehabilitation projects, and the continuous care for the injured, sick, and endangered sea turtles housed at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.

The Loggerhead Marinelife Center is a non-profit organization located in Juno Beach. The center’s mission is to help protect marine life and to help promote ocean conservation. The center rescues injured or endangered sea turtles to bring to their sea turtle hospital for further care and diagnosis before releasing back into the ocean.

This May, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum has two remaining Lighthouse Sunset Tours. On Wednesday nights, the Lighthouse invites the public to attend a tour of the lighthouse at sunset.

Climb to the top of the Lighthouse Towers and witness the incredible sunset views of Jupiter. Those who attend the tour will get a chance to witness the Light turn on and illuminate the sky as well as get a sneak peek inside the Lighthouse Watchroom to see how everything works.

The Lighthouse Sunset Tours last approximately an hour and cost $25 dollars per person or $20 dollars per Lighthouse Members. Children are welcomed to attend the tour and must be 48 inches tall to climb the 105 steps to the top of the Lighthouse and be accompanied by an adult.

On select Saturday and Sundays of every month, the River Center in Jupiter teams up with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary “Flotilla 52” to provide a series of Boating Safety Courses. The course is targeted towards young boaters in our community, but all are welcomed to attend and learn about the safety on the water.

The River Center is hosting Boater Safety Course this Saturday and Sunday. The class will be completely virtual and taught in a lecture-style class. The class is free to attend but a $10 dollar deposit is required to reserve a spot. The deposit will be returned at the end of the class. Once the two-day virtual class is completed and the exam taken, the young boaters will receive their Florida Boater Safety Identification card that can be used…

Every day the Loggerhead Marinelife Center hosts a Public Guided Tour for chance for the public to get a tour of the sea turtle research and rehabilitation center.  The tours are offered at several different times each day, and on select Monday nights, the center hosts a Public Guided Tour Hospital Edition.

The Hospital Edition offers a special behind the scenes access tour inside the sea turtle hospital. Guest will get to see where the sea turtle patients receive treatment and will learn about the different causes of the patients injuries. During the tour, light bites and refreshments will be provided.

Every week, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center hosts several events for the public to learn more about sea turtles and the center’s rehabilitation and research efforts through their sea turtle hospital and rehabilitation center. The events are open to the public and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center is one of northern Palm Beach County most popular attractions. On Saturday mornings, the center hosts a Kids Fishing Program aimed for children ages 8 through 12.

During the program, the younger fishermen will learn the basic techniques for fishing from the Juno Beach Pier including knot tying, casting, fish handling, and the proper catch and release techniques.
