On Tuesday, American Honda Motor Company announced that it has extended its title sponsorship of the Honda Classic for another five years, continuing to make Honda the longest standing sponsor with the PGA Tour. Honda, who began sponsoring the Honda Classic in 1982, was in the last year of its current contract. With the extension, their name will be on the Palm Beach Gardens event through the 2021 event under the new deal.

According to a report from Golf Digest, two of the top local golfers facing off in a prime time, made for tv event in June. 

Palm Beach Gardens resident Rory Mcllroy and Loxahatchee River resident Rickie Fowler will face off under the lights on Tuesday, June 7th at Detroit Golf Club. The match will begin at 7:00pm, and despite the sun staying out later in the summer, most of the back nine will be played under the lights. The Golf Channel will air the first two hours of covereage with CBS airing the final two hours.

Rory (ranked 3rd in the world) and Fowler (ranked 4th in the world) will be joined by celebrities in the match, but the format has not been decided yet.

On Tuesday, the Arnold Palmer Invitational announced its early list of commits for the 2016 edition of the event and for the second straight year, Palm Beach Gardens resident Rory Mcllroy will headline the list of entrants at Bay Hill.

After having skipped the Orlando event put on by Arnold Palmer for the beggining of his professional career, Mcllroy decided to add the event to his 2015 schedule and finished in a tie for 11th at 11-under par.

“It’s been a longtime coming,” Rory said at his Wednesday press conference before last year's event. “I haven’t played this tournament for a few reasons over the past few years but it’s nice that it was able to fit in the schedule. I really like the course and I feel like it really sets up well for me.”

Wycliffe Golf and Country Club in Wellington has been selected to host the Honda Classic Pre-Qualifier on its East Course. The Pre-Qualifier will take place on Thursday, February 18th. The top 25 golfers and ties from the Pre-Qualifier will advance to the Monday Qualifier at Mayacoo Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach.

The Allianz Championship gets under way this Friday at Broken Sound in Boca Raton and is headlined by eight members of the World Golf Hall of Fame. 

The first full field event of the 2016 season will feature 77 golfers, headlined by local Boca Resident and 2010 winner and World Golf Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer. The other Hall of Fame members in the field are Jupiter resident Nick Price, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Colin Montgomerie, Mark O'Meara and Curtis Strange. For the eighth straight year, Rory Mcllroy will tee it up at the PGA Tour's annual stop in Palm Beach Gardens at the Honda Classic. 

The event has become somewhat of a "home game" for Mcllroy who is a Palm Beach Gardens resident and lives just a few minutes from PGA National. The event will once again kick off the Florida Swing, and Mcllroy, who won the event in 2012 and lost in a playoff in 2014, is looking forward to playing in an event that he says suits his eye.

Padraig Harrington, who sat out the majority of the fall after he had surgery to repair a torn knee ligament, returned to action this past weekend at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. After his T6 finish, he made an announcement that should make Honda Classic officials and South Florida fans of his very happy. The Irish golfer announced that he plans on playing a regular schedule, which should mean a return to PGA National and the Honda Classic.

 “You’re not sure what to expect, so I was happy with what I saw and (hope) all goes well for the rest of the season,” Harrington said.

The Allianz Championship last week announced that the 2015 edition of the event at Broken Sound Golf Club in Boca Raton raised over $600,000 with just over $400,000 of that being donated to the Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

The hospital, which is the primary beneficiary of the Aliianz, has received over $1 million in the 10 years since the event moved to the Boca Raton area.

“Not only have proceeds from the Allianz Championship supported our mission in a material way,” said Jerry Fedele, President and CEO of the Hospital, “but we have also benefitted from the publicity the Allianz generates and the genuine interest the Champions Tour players have shown in our clinical capabilities and the services we provide to our patients.”

The local golf community has lost a longtime rules official and major player in the local golf community.

H. Mallory Privett, a memmber of both the South Florida PGA and FSGA Halls of Fame, died on December 26th at the age of 79 after losing his battle to a lengthy illness. Privett, who served as mayor of North Palm Beach from 1971-74, spent much of the past 23 years since his retirement serving as a rules official and volunteer coordinator, serving as Volunteer Chairman of the Honda Classic from 2006-12. In November, he became just the third recipient of the Florida State Golf Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
