A manatee rescued in West Palm Beach is now being treated in Miami at the Miami Seaquarium.  Police officers with Riviera Beach and West Palm Beach teamed up with officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to rescue the manatee near the Manatee Lagoon.  A spokesman at Manatee Lagoon said the manatee is being treated for a severe lung infection.  The good news is she is eating regularly now.

Manatee Lagoon is one of Palm Beach County’s fun and engaging family-friendly attractions, with interactive, entertaining exhibits that tickle your curiosity about the environment of the Lake Worth Lagoon and the wonderful world of manatees. Due to COVID the family friendly attraction is temporarily closed.

Every Saturday morning, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center is continuing to host their Self-Guided Beach Cleanup through the new year. Every weekend, volunteers head to the beach to participate in helping keep our local beaches and ocean clean.

The Self-Guided Beach Cleanup Program was introduced in 2020 as a new program that has been added to the calendar weekly. It is 2021 and we should be incorporating healthy habits into our lives.  Perhaps you are at a loss for a new healthy habit.  Look no further than my family’s homeland, Spain.  Wander around the streets of Spain in the mid-afternoon and you will likely find a lot of the shops are closed briefly. That is because the country still values the midday nap. The rest is called a "Spain siesta". The term stems from the Latin word for “sixth hour,” which traditionally fell around noon since the day started at dawn.

Obviously getting some extra zzz’s can make you feel more rested, but there are other physical health benefits, including better heart function, hormonal maintenance, and cell repair.  According to a study by the researchers at NASA, a brief…

Manatees have a very friendly disposition, and while it may be tempting to feed or give them fresh water from your dock, it is illegal as they are a protected species.

Manatees are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, the Endangered Species Act of 1973, and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978. It is illegal to feed, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, annoy, or molest manatees. For more information about state laws, please visit https://myfwc.com/conservation/you-conserve/wildlife/manatee/.

On the other hand, it’s wonderful to experience these calm…

She came in with unintentional boat strike injuries to the carapace which caused a systemic infection, hypoglycemia, and inability to dive and stay underwater. Her white blood cell count has increased and has been monitored closely since arrival, and she has gone through various surgeries and procedures to repair her carapace using implants.
